Celebrating a festival plays a vital role in the country’s tourism industry by boosting the local economy. It attracts tourists from different countries, which is one of the major sources of income for most countries in the world.
One of the most visited festivals by tourists in the Philippines is the “Dinagyang Festival” in Iloilo, wherein thousands to over a million of visitors watch the performance of different tribes coming from various towns in the city, showcasing their talents through dancing, acting, and in many ways. Dinagyang is a Hiligaynon word which means “merrymaking.” It is celebrated every fourth Saturday of January, a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City in honor of the Santo Nino (the Child Jesus). The participants wear colorful costumes, adorned with a variety of colorful fabrics, beadwork, feathers, and other embellishments. Additionally, they wear masks during their performance which demonstrates their artistic abilities. The tribal dance competition is at the Iloilo Freedom grandstand facing the sea, making it even more extraordinary.
There are three major events during the Dinagyang: The Illuminations and Floats Parade of Lights (held on Friday), the Kasadyahan Festival (held on Saturday), and the Ati Tribes Competition (held on Sunday). Tribal dance is the most watched event because of its energetic tribal dance accompanied by different musical instruments dominated by drums. Aside from these three major events, there are also lots of activities being conducted around. For instance, there are concerts, live bands, fluvial procession, Miss Iloilo, motorcades and more. There are also food stalls with different street foods presenting the city’s famous delicacies, and other nation’s famous delectable.
