The Parish of Santa Barbara in Iloilo, Philippines is built in Baroque Renaissance and cruciform – shaped. It is dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, and those who work with explosives. It was built in the 18th century by the Augustinian friars. The church and convent, noted for Moorish architectural elements, became a National Historical Landmark as declared by the National Historical Institute because of its historical value and importance. It was also declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum.
The church was chosen by General Martin Tofilo Delgado as the location to lead the revolution in 1898, which was called “The Cry of Santa Barbara.” The town was the first to secede from Spain and wave the Philippine flag. When the Philippines was placed under Martial Law in 1972 under the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos, 2lt Pablo G. Fernandez was caught, detained, and summarily executed in Santa Barbara because of his objections against Martial Law.
The church has also been a haven for bats and some birds. The sound of these flying creatures makes the ambience more relaxing and opulent. A beautiful pulpit is located on the right side facing the altar where the minister or priests stands to deliver or lead worships. There are also statues of saints beside the church, a mausoleum, and a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs. Also, there is a museum containing antiques, photographs, and artifacts related to the historical heritage.
In July 2007, the new Iloilo International Airport, located in Cabatuan and Santa Barbara opened to the public and brought significant progression in the town’s economy.
