And is seasonally available during the months of May to September.

Though mangosteen is typically consumed raw and on its own, it’s also regularly used in sweet baked goods, salads, drinks, and as a flavor in ice cream or sorbet. The fruit is also sometimes used in curry dishes.

According to animal study, it was found that mangosteen might display an antidepressant-like effect and reduce mental confusion, disorientation or restlessness. It has potential uses for diabetes, cancer, obesity, gum problems, microbial infections and many more. Also, the leaves and the bark may be used to make tea.

How does it taste? The flesh of mangosteen is soft, exceptionally sweet and juicy and is often compared to a mixture of fruits like pineapple, lychee, strawberry, and peach. It melts in your tongue leaving its tiny seed and subtle acidity which adds complexity to its taste profile.

How to eat mangosteen? When it feels smooth, has a purple back color and feels heavy for its size, then the fruit is ripe and ready to eat. You can use a knife to cut open and eat, but it is very common to use hands to squeeze or press the side until it cracks. The skin is inedible, but it can be used in composting. Externally the rind is applied as an ointment to treat various skin problems including eczema.
