It is situated on the border of present-day Talisay and Bacolod, in a 440-hectare sugar plantation. In the 1900s, this remarkable mansion was built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugarcane baron, to honor and remember his wife, Maria Braga.
The structure echoed European architecture then, with seashell patterns that showed the touch of Maria’s ship captain father. As an ode to his forever love, Mariano molded M’s into posts of the mansion, each row reclining and facing each other to symbolize their eternal commitment. It includes the memory of Maria’s alabaster skin reflected on the structure’s finish, a fine mixture of egg whites and concrete, giving it a marble-like feel.
The mansion has a total of 10 bedrooms, covering an area of more than 900 square meters. It has a ballroom, a library, a neoclassical fountain outside, and a wishing well. The mansion also has a café restaurant where meals are prepared by an Italian Chef, a mini-golf course, a giant chess board, and a souvenir shop/store attended frequently by many visitors and even tourists.

During World War II, the Japanese forces occupied the Philippines, and this grand house was set on fire intentionally by Filipino rebels to prevent the Japanese from using it as a fortress. For three days, the mansion was on fire, but the concrete structure and the strong pillars remained intact. It was abandoned and neglected after the war and became a dumping site for garbage and a playground for children.
In 2008, the descendants of Don Mariano decided to clean up the area, install lights, and landscape the gardens to restore and preserve the mansion as a tourist attraction. They also installed sound systems and hired friendly tour guides who could speak Hiligaynon, Filipino, and English to tell the story of the mansion and the family. Visitors can also listen and watch on screen about the history of the mansion before exploring the place.
Nowadays, The Ruins has become one of the best wedding receptions because of its magical scenic view, especially at night.
