August 27, 2024

Among the different types of transportation, what is your favorite mode of transport as a commuter? Do you prefer buses, cars, trains or a motorcycle to avoid inevitable situations? There are numerous types of vehicles in the Philippines used for transporting people especially on land. That includes bus, car (taxi), e-bike, motorcycle, jeepney, tricycle and many more. These types of vehicles can be seen all over the Philippines.

However, there are some areas which are not accessible by jeepney or by bus because of its narrow, bumpy and rough roads. For example, if you live in mountainous areas which are away from civilization, these places usually have poor quality and impassable roads. It could be sandy, rocky, muddy and extremely slippery when wet, wherein, it makes the journey perilous. Unfortunately, for those residing in this type of locality there is no alternative other than making their transportation uncomplicated and safe. Highland or upland travel is never easy and needs a lot of courage. Some roads are on the edge of a cliff where you can see a city, ocean, or field way down below. Under certain conditions, a jeepney is commonly used to set foot in this community. Many communities have limited access to transportation, and they must consider the time of departure and arrival of the vehicle into their plans for the day. Usually there is only one trip specifically in the morning if you are going to the city and one trip back in the afternoon for your way back from the city. So don’t be late for your ride!

Jeepneys, also well-known as “jeep”, has been used as a mode of transportation in the Philippines since the 1950’s. It was modified and turned by Filipinos into a bus-like vehicle that can carry passengers. It has a long bench-like seat where passengers need to sit facing each other. Jeepneys are always colorful and embellished with attractive stickers. They also have specific routes all over the country. However, they often stop to unload and load passengers. In provinces, passengers can ride on top of the jeepney (roof) and also can hang on both sides of the entrance for those who do not want to sit inside. You can hang by holding on to rods with your foot on a step on which is intended for goods like for example a sack of rice.

Riding a jeepney is much less expensive than taking a cab, modern bus, motorcycle or three-wheeled vehicles that can only carry four to six passengers. Also, it’s a bit windy inside since it has open windows. You might need to tie your hair to keep it from flying around because it is usually crowded inside making it uncomfortable for the other passengers.

Additionally, Jeepneys are very important in provinces, for they are commonly used to transport sacks of rice from the farm to the buyer. Goods can be stuffed inside or on top of the vehicle and it is easy to unload.

Jeepneys are so cheap and simple where they are also rented by those who are wanting to take a trip, like going to the beach for instance or an educational trip for school.
